Structure of the school system

 

School boards and school authorities

The school authorities and the school boards are responsible for the education of the children in the Landkreis Börde. School boards are the counties and independent cities. The school boards have to provide the school offer and the school facilities to the necessary extent, to equip them with the necessary equipment and to maintain them properly as well as to abolish or restrict them under consideration of the goals of the school development planning (§ 64 School Law Saxony-Anhalt). The tasks of the school authority are e.g. the provision of the material conditions for the execution of the instruction, the school development planning, the organization of the pupil transportation, questions of the school route security, the conclusion of the legal pupil insurance (accident, damage to property and liability) and regulation of the admission at secondary schools (under circumstances lottery).

The state has supervision over the entire school system. State school supervision includes the planning, ordering and development of the school system.

The school authorities are

The State Education Authority is responsible for legal, administrative and technical supervision, and advises and supports schools in their further development. This is also where decisions are made on applications for schooling outside the school district or for special educational support/common instruction.

 

Start, duration and end of compulsory education

Attendance at school is compulsory for all children and young people living in the state of Saxony-Anhalt (compulsory education). All children who have reached the age of six by June 30 become obligated to attend school at the beginning of the following school year.

Information on elementary school

Compulsory schooling lasts for 12 years after it begins. All school-age children initially attend schools at the primary level (elementary school, special school) and the lower secondary level (secondary school, community school, grammar school, special school, comprehensive school) for at least 9 years. If they do not subsequently attend general education schools (secondary school, community school, grammar school, special school, comprehensive school), they fulfill their compulsory education by attending a vocational school. à Link to § 37 and § 40 of the School Act. A person obliged to attend school who does not fulfill his or her compulsory education can be brought to school even against his or her will if other pedagogical means, in particular personal counseling, advice to the parents, the trainer and the employer of the person obliged to attend school as well as the involvement of the competent youth welfare office, have been unsuccessful. à Link to §§ 42 to 44a School Act
